05/ The Hex

Building beyond shelter

Statement

The Hex is inspired by the real-life experiences of an individual who faced homelessness. This narrative served as the foundation for creating a user profile for an Individual Guerilla Habitation Unit (IgHU). From this initial design, programmatic needs were assessed and expanded to develop multiple units, which were then combined into a cohesive structure to serve as a homeless shelter in downtown Oakland.

The shelter's design integrates both immediate necessities and long-term support services, including laundry rooms, clinic spaces, and career services. Communal areas are also incorporated to foster a sense of community and collaboration. The building's program and structure were communicated through a series of graphic comics, offering a visual narrative to complement the architectural concept.
