01/ Healing Haven

An open space urban oasis

Statement

This project addresses the San Francisco Bay Area's housing crisis by proposing an affordable housing complex near Lake Merritt in Oakland, designed for nurses and medical students. The site, chosen for its proximity to medical facilities, supports the project's mission to serve underserved demographics while fostering a supportive living environment. A stepped massing strategy, informed by site and climate analysis, optimizes natural light, mitigates shadows, and reduces cold winter winds. The design integrates terraces and balconies to promote open spaces and enhance community interaction. Additionally, the "broken donut" layout improves cross-ventilation, maximizes views of Lake Merritt, and balances functionality with aesthetic charm.
