Bridging design with history and legacy
Statement
Located on Angel Island in the San Francisco Bay Area, this project draws inspiration from the island's complex history as a site of immigration, detainment, and eventual liberation. The design begins with a clear pathway leading visitors through spaces that alternate between feelings of enclosure and openness, symbolizing the journey of confinement to freedom. The architecture integrates into the island's natural landscape, using materials and forms that harmonize with the lush greenery and ocean views. Key programmatic spaces provide opportunities for reflection and learning, while framed views connect visitors to the land, sea, and sky.
