Collaborative Project

Statement

This project involved designing and constructing folding beds and multifunctional furniture for an elementary school in San Francisco's Mission District, which also serves as a family shelter after hours. A collaboration between the Academy of Art University School of Architecture and BVHM Community School, it blended design, social impact, and community engagement. The focus shifted toward assembling 69 folding beds to meet the shelter's needs. Initially assigned to create a storage-bench unit, the team instead prioritized bed assembly to ensure timely use by families. This shift highlighted the importance of adaptability and teamwork in socially driven design. The experience reinforced the role of hands-on architecture in addressing real-world challenges.
